Ayurvedic Treatment For Spinal Injuries Vardhan Ayurveda

A spinal cord injury is damage to any part of the spinal cord or nerves at the end of the spinal canal. Spinal cord injury damages the nearby tissues and bones. It is contingent on the severity of the injury, that a person may lose function or mobility in different parts of the body.

The spinal cord injuries take a toll not just on your physical health alone, but drastically affect your emotional health too.

Understanding Spinal Cord Injury

Our spinal cord sends messages between the brain and the rest of the body. The spinal cord is surrounded and protected by layers of tissue called meninges and a column of vertebrae (spinal bones). Most spinal cord injuries occur due to a sudden, traumatic blow to the vertebrae. The fractured bones then damage the spinal cord and its related nerves. In rare instances of spinal injuries, it can result in a complete split of the spinal cord, too.

Symptoms of Spinal Cord Injury

There are two deciding factors that indicate Spinal Cord Injury:

  1. The place/location of the injury occurred on the spinal cord.

  2. The severity of the injury.

The lowest part of the spinal cord that does not get damaged after an injury is known as the neurological level of injury. The severity of the spinal injury is usually known as “the completeness“. It is classified as either of the following:

Incomplete. It is said to be incomplete if a person has some motor or sensory function below the affected area.

Complete: If all sensation or sensory feeling and all ability to control movements (motor function) are lost below the spinal cord injury, then the injury is called complete.

Also, the paralysis occurring from a spinal cord injury can be referred to as:

Tetraplegia: It is also known as quadriplegia, this means that the arms, hands, trunk, pelvic organs and legs are all affected by the spinal cord injury.

Paraplegia: This paralysis affects all or parts of the trunk, legs and pelvic organs.

Spinal cord injuries can cause the following symptoms depending on the severity of the case. Some of the symptoms are discussed below:

Loss of Movement

The spinal cord injuries may lead to loss of sensation that includes the inability to sense heat, cold or any similar feelings.

Loss of bowel or bladder control

Another symptom of spinal injury is the loss of bowel or bladder control.

Loss of bladder or bowel control, leading to difficulty with balancing and walking

Affecting Sexual Functions

The injury often leads to changes in sexual function, sexual sensitivity and fertility.

Difficulty breathing

A person may also feel difficulty breathing, coughing or clearing secretions from their lungs.

Other symptoms are oddly positioned or twisted neck or back.

Severe Back Pain

Severe Back Pain or pressure in your neck, head or back

Weakness, incoordination or paralysis in any part of the body are the emerging symptoms of spinal injuries.

Numbness

When you go through numbness, tingling or loss of sensation in your hands, fingers, feet or toes, it may be due to a spinal cord injury.

Though there are many treatments that include surgery, medication and physical therapy, we will look into the ayurvedic solutions for spinal cord injuries.

Correcting the Vata Dosha

In Ayurveda, Vata is the dosha very dominant during old age, leading to degeneration.

Degeneration is a process mainly due to ageing. Around 90 per cent of degenerative disorders are due to vitiated Vata dosha.

Degeneration may also occur due to wear and tear. In Ayurveda, these are mainly called abhighata which lead to a disease-like condition.

At times, the pathology of degeneration is either genetic or any infection (aganthu) that affects a person’s bodily functions, hence causing disease.

When it comes to degenerative spine disorders, most of the diseases are due to disc degeneration, prolapse, bulging, dehydration, and bony changes; these are mainly due to different doshic imbalances

In most of the disorders, bone is involved with soft tissues like cartilage and nerves, leading to a Vata predominant disorder.

Depending upon the causative factors, the level of doshic imbalance varies. Therefore, the treatment for spinal injuries is different.
