Infertility Treatment In Ayurveda- Finding the Way Out
The infertility issue is witnessing a surge in India and across the globe. According to the World Health Organisation, the data states that between 48 million couples and 186 million individuals have infertility globally.
What is infertility?
According to the definition by the World Health Organization, infertility is a disease of the male or female reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.
There are two types of infertility namely primary infertility and secondary infertility.
Primary infertility: It is the inability to have any pregnancy.
Whereas Secondary Infertility is the inability to have a pregnancy after a previously successful conception.
The International Classification of Diseases, a study by WHO, sheds light on the various causes of primary and secondary infertility in both women and men.
Infertility may occur due to various factors which include, male factors, female factors, or a combination of male and female factors or may be unexplained.
Environmental factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol intake, obesity and exposure to environmental pollutants have been associated with lower fertility rates.
A Shift in Infertility
A few years back most infertility problems were found only in women but today, around 40% of problems related to infertility cases are now found in men as well. Most of the problems in men are being found with low sperm, blue sperm or motility of sperm.
Causes of Infertility in Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda, the process of conception is related to Shukardhatu in both males and females. Ovum in females and semen in males is formed from Shukra. A person who has healthy Shukra has a brightness of confidence, with eyes and skin that seem to radiate light. The term Shukra in Ayurveda universally applies to sperm, but can also apply to the entire makeup of semen.
Shukra dhatu is formed from other 6 types of dhatus namely:- Rasa, Rakta, Mansa, meda, asthi, majja.
These six dhatus form and nourish the Shukra dhatu. Any imbalance in these six elements may lead to infertility.
Other causes may include-
ovarian factors,
tubal factors,
age-related factors, uterine disorders,
PCOS,
endometriosis,
hormone imbalance,
stress, etc.
These factors lead to Doshas imbalance (control the activities of the body-Vata, Pitta and Kapha), thus causing infertility.
Infertility Treatment in Ayurveda
Infertility treatment in Ayurveda is a holistic approach.
Ayurveda ensures well-being by improving the body’s self-healing and balancing processes. It does not depend on any external or foreign element to balance the hormones in the body. Infertility treatment in Ayurveda focuses on the holistic treatment of infertility by improving the general well-being of the person.
There are many methods of treating infertility issues in Ayurveda. Let’s discuss them in detail.
Agni deepana and Ama pachana
The formation of ama, which is the toxins produced when food forms remain undigested in the stomach, due to the imbalance in Agni (the strength of digestion) leads to several diseases.
Hence, the treatment of Ama must necessarily include treatment of Agni, through the use of the digestive and carminative Ayurvedic formulas. Ayurveda Panchakarma Therapy aims to remove Ama, the toxins and eventually correct Agni.
Vatanulomana
Vata is the primary dosha associated with infertility. Vatanulomana involves the process of correcting the roles of Vata, which is very crucial in fertility treatment. Ayurvedic formulations, following routine exercises and a strict diet schedule, help in Vatanulomana.
Sodhana
Effective sneha-swedas are performed before sodhan. Treatment approaches such as Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purification), Vasti (mediated enema), and Utharavasti specific enema which are delivered through urethral or vaginal pathways are then conducted according to the condition of the patient.
The patient must strictly follow the peyadi krama (strict dietary regimen to be followed after Sodhana). This is a detoxification treatment which helps to eliminate toxins from the body. This infertility treatment tends to fix ovarian, tubular, and uterine disorders that induce infertility.
Ayurveda treatments help reduce anxiety and remove impurities from the body. Such treatments in Ayurveda feed the body, revitalise the mind and improve the immune system.
Essential Herbs in Ayurveda
Infertility is the outcome of some type of disorder. The herbs used in the procedure are geared at eliminating the root cause. The most widely recognised herbs are Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemousus), and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis).
These herbs are very useful to establish a synergistic hormonal balance between the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and the Luteinizing Hormone (LH).
Infertility treatment encompasses the use of a mixuture of some of the herbs in the right proportion.
