Basti in Ayurveda and Its Lasting Benefits

There are many treatments and therapies in Ayurveda for the holistic healing of a person. One of these treatments is the Basti, which has been unanimously praised and accepted by the ancient Ayurvedic Gurus Charaka and others. Of the five procedures in the Panchakarma, Basti is considered to be the most effective treatment in Ayurveda.

In this article, you shall learn about the importance and benefits of Basti treatments in Ayurveda.

ORIGIN OF BASTI IN AYURVEDA

The term Basti finds its origin in the word bastidravya, which means animal urinary bladder for the administration of bastidravya. According to classical Ayurvedic literature, Basti is perceived as the most effective treatment in shodhana for treating diseases concerning vata.

Basti type wherein, the decoction is the major part of is called asthapana basti or niruha basti. Whereas the basti which encompasses oil or other sneha (oleaginous substance), as a major part is called as anuvasana.

The effect of Basti is contingent on several factors and Basti-danakala is one of the important factors.

Basti treatment in Ayurveda majorly involves the introduction of herbal decoctions and medicated oils into the colon through the rectum. Though it directly affects the colon, it is not a localised or symptomatic treatment. Basti treatment requires a highly specialised procedure aimed at achieving a therapeutic goal and must essentially be carried out in a hospital setting by an expert.

STAGES IN BASTI TREATMENT

1.Mixing of Honey, salt And Herbal Paste

The doctrine of three vital forces, which in Ayurveda is known as Tridosha Siddhant is important for maintaining a healthy body and curing diseases. These three vital forces are Vata, Pita, and Kapha.

Vata in Ayurveda is perceived as the most crucial dosha. When vata dosha is imbalanced in the body, it can cause severe health-related issues. The interference of Vata with the functioning of the body causes many imbalances.

Basti treatment in Ayurveda involves the use of the natural movement of Vata dosha to remove the toxins and waste materials from the body.

Basti deep cleanses the vata area, targeting the large intestine. Basti treatment balances and nurtures Vata dosha. Upon the normal functioning of Vata, it helps bring the toxins and waste matter out of the dhatus ( body cells) and eliminates them from the body.

Basti treatment in Ayurveda has the following two actions:

  1. Removing the vitiated doshas (morbid substances/toxins).
  2. Nourishing the body.

Removal of Doshas:
It is the major action that facilitates the excretion of morbid substances responsible for the disease process into the colon from where they are evacuated.

2. Adding Oil

The second action involves the absorption of Basti drugs for its systemic action. The gut has a neural system called the enteric nervous system. It is present entirely in the wall of the gut, beginning from the oesophagus and extending to the anus.

Several gut disorders such as colitis, i.b.s. originate from problems within the gut. Major messenger molecules which go into the regulation of our moods and emotions like vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), insulin, cholecystokinin (cck), serotonin, dopamine, glutamate, norepinephrine, nitric oxide, enkephalins etc are found in the intestines as well as the brain, suggesting our “gut feelings”. Basti treatment acts directly on this system.
